EWS1 Certificate
Certificates for the verification of external wall combustibility.
Fire spread via the external walls of a building can have catastrophic consequences, exacerbated by the fact that it undermines many of the other fire safety features that might be employed in a building. Unlike something like egress paths, it has been identified that the fire spread properties of external walls are not easy to identify and high-risk buildings may exist without the knowledge of either the owner or occupants.
For this reason the EWS1 Form exists. This form is the conclusion of an assessment by a suitably qualified person that offers a simple categorisation of the combustibility of the external walls of a building. The simplicity of this form ensures that it is readily understandable by many parties, such as owners, occupiers, lenders, insurers, buyers, and other interested parties.
The EWS1 Form does not exist to satsify the Building Regulations, and as such may be requested in a variety of circumstances. For this reason such a form is always marked as a requirement unless it has been identified that such a form is not necessary.
